October 2013 – Volunteer Opportunities at the San Francisco Veterans Equity Center Happy Pilipin@ American History Month! Fact: October 26, 1990 (Sec. 405 – Immigration Act) – U.S. Congress passed Sec. 405 which allowed Naturalization for those who served honorably in an active duty status under the command of United States Armed Forces in the Far east (USAFEE), or within the Philippine Army, the Philippine Scouts, or recognized Guerrilla Units at any time during the period beginning September 1, 1939 and ending December 31, 1946. U.S. Veteran benefits were not included in this legislation.
VEC has volunteer opportunities for the month of October:
1. Food Distribution – Help pass out food or check clients in during our Immigrant Food Assistance Program, 1 – 3 pm, October 3, 10, 17, 24, 31. 2. Legal Clinic – VEC offers free legal counseling on immigration issues, we need volunteers to help with set up and check in clients, 2 – 4 pm, October 4 and 18. 3. VEC’s Got Talent – Do you love to karaoke? Share your passion for singing with our seniors on Tuesdays. We’re always looking for volunteers who can serve food and spend time with our seniors, 2 – 4 pm, October 8 and 22. 4. Bingo Birthday Bash – Celebrate the births of our lovely seniors with fun and games! Help facilitate the bingo game and serve food, 2 – 4 pm, October 25. 5. Office Support – VEC is open 9 – 5 pm (Closed 12 – 1 pm), Monday through Friday. We need help calling clients, filing, data entry, and other tasks. If you’re looking for office/administrative experience, VEC is the place for you! 6. Bill Sorro Housing Program – Do you believe that housing is a human right? Are you interested in learning about development and the effects of gentrification? Volunteer with VEC’s Bill Sorro Housing Program (BiSHoP)! We are looking for volunteers interested in community organizing and outreach. *Nighttime volunteer opportunities available* October 9, 10 am – 2 pm – “SOMA Time and the Livin’ Ain’t Easy” Walk of Shame – Join BiSHoP, Senior & Disability Action, and Housing Rights Committee SF in protesting against gentrification, development, and evictions occurring in the neighborhood! We need volunteers to help make signs, join in chants and our “walk of shame”, and assist participants in signing in. Attention USF students: VEC will be tabling at USF Kasamahan’s 3rd General Meeting this Thursday @ 7pm (McLaren 250). Come say hi! SAVE THE DATE: SF Veterans Day Parade, Sunday, November 10, 2013. Help fundraise for the Filipino Veterans cable car and march alongside Filipino WWII Veterans, their families, and other supporters.
